In 1414, the Holy Roman Emperor, Wenceslas’ brother Sigismund (1368–1437), called for a council at the imperial city of Constance to resolve the schism and the issues in Bohemia. He invited Hus to attend the council and even promised him safe passage. However, as soon as Hus arrived, he was arrested and put on trial for heresy.
